Chole Island makes some delightful upgrades.

On Chole Island in the Mafia Island Marine Park in Tanzania, they have been quietly upgraded this season, with a private plunge pool nestled into the rocks. Plus an en-suite shower has carved between coral stone - still open to the sky and surrounding mangrove forest.

The treehouses are open to the ocean breeze, built gently around ancient baobab trees For many travellers, this raises a natural curiosity: Will it feel too wild? Will they miss the familiar comforts of a conventional hotel? And for guests arriving after days on safari, after climbing Kilimanjaro, or after long international journeys, comfort matters.

But comfort at Chole Mjini Treehouse Lodge is designed differently. You’ll have electricity, ensuite bathrooms, attentive hospitality, and privacy, but also space, silence, and immersion in nature. In working with the ocean breeze, the result is a space where guests often sleep deeper than they have in months.

At Chole Mjini Treehouse Lodge, luxury is…

  • Coffee rising to your balcony in a woven basket at sunrise

  • Outdoor showers surrounded by birdsong

  • Dinner locations that change nightly: the jetty, under the tamarind tree, amongst ancient ruins

  • Fish on your plate that was caught that day

  • Swimming gently, respectfully, alongside the largest fish in the sea: the whale shark

  • Watching turtle hatchlings find the ocean by instinct alone

  • Running barefoot across a sandbank, water in every direction, just you and someone you love

  • Gliding silently through the mangroves on a paddleboard, where the water mirrors the sky

  • Wind in your hair as a traditional dhow carries you into the sunset

  • Hosting only a handful of guests at a time

For those curious to learn more, our blog is also receiving regular updates, including a recent piece titled Is Chole Mjini Comfortable?. Stay tuned as well for an upcoming story written by one of our guests: “A Chole Wedding.”
