Nomad reimagines Expeditionary Walking Camp — introducing Charlie

Nomad Tanzania is proud to announce the evolution of one of its most

iconic adventure experiences. The Expeditionary Walking Camp, beloved

for its pioneering spirit and lightweight mobility, has been reimagined,

refined, and renamed.

Introducing Charlie — Nomad’s roving, ultralight private camp that embodies the original ethos of expeditionary safaris in Tanzania.

Charlie takes its name from one of Nomad’s earliest mobile expedition

camps — a nod to our roots and a reminder of the style of safaris we were

running more than 20 years ago. The camp carries that same mindset

today: simple, efficient, quietly confident, and always on the move,

travelling with a keen eye on the elements and the land around it.

At its heart, Charlie remains a brilliant base for proper walking safaris in

wild, remote places, but it has now been expanded and refined to offer

even greater scope. Charlie now pairs exceptional walking with the

flexibility of game drives, allowing guests to cover more ground and

explore more deeply than ever before. Its purpose is unchanged — to take

travellers away from crowded areas and into the quieter corners where

Nomad safaris feel most at home.

Why the change?

This evolution reflects our guests’ growing appetite for stripped back,

intelligent safari experiences — safaris that prioritise wilderness, curiosity,

and the freedom to explore without constraints. Charlie reflects the camp’s

spirit, history and Nomad’s adventure driven DNA.

A concept rooted in exploration

Charlie moves seasonally through some of Tanzania’s most remarkable,

least visited landscapes. Each area has its own distinct appeal, and Charlie

responds to conditions on the ground — weather, wildlife movements, and

the subtleties of each ecosystem — shifting as needed to remain perfectly

placed for walking and wilderness immersion.

The camp itself is lightweight and exclusive use, with four walking tents for

up to six guests, two shared bathrooms, removable flysheets for stargazing, and a small, highly experienced crew who travel with the camp and manage every detail.

Seasons & locations

From June 2026, Charlie operates as a double act — two simultaneous

roaming camps moving through different locations across the year.

Charlie Ruaha — 1 July to 31 October

Set along the stretch of the Ruaha River emerging from the Usangu

wetlands, this is superb walking country: baobabs, jackalberries, riverine

woodland and floodplain edges, excellent resident game, and very little

human footprint.

Charlie Ugalla — 15 July to 15 October

A newly established National Park of floodplains, palm forests, termite

mounds and seasonal river channels. Guests are often the only visitors in

the entire park — a raw, pioneering landscape made for exploratory

walking and thoughtful game viewing.

Charlie Southwest Serengeti — 1 November to 31 May

The Serengeti of 20 years ago: open plains, acacia woodland, granite kopjes

and Rift Valley views. Not migrationled, but landscapeled — perfect for

walking, kopje climbing, and unhurried exploration in a livedin Maasai

landscape.

Charlie Sanjan — 15 November to 15 May

A dramatic fusion of cliffs, riverine woodland, deep gorges and wide-open

Rift Valley country. Extraordinary geological features, Maasai culture, and

some of Tanzania’s most atmospheric walking terrain.
