Tent With A View's sports academy aims to give Tanzania Top 10 World ranking

However, in our corner of Africa, we believe there is a match for the world’s greatest safari. Cultural tours can be a minefield. At their worst they look like a cynical exploitation of a passing opportunity. At their best, they can change the lives of all parties for the better.

A Tent With A View girls sports academy, on the very edge of the Serengeti, is home to future sporting superstars and a whole lot more confident, aspirational girls.

Tanzania doesn’t do female sport stars. Put simply, there have never been any!

With no heroes to follow, no reports in the newspaper and no games to watch on TV or elsewhere, few girls dare to dream and few coaches exist capable of helping those that do.

We have built a facility which will change everything. It has opened with a focus on netball. We have world class coaches, world class facilities and we will nurture some world class players. The best will play in the professional leagues of UK and Australia and when they do, the Tanzanian TV channels will begin to following the new heroes.

More girls will want to learn to play back home, more investment will come from government and more girls will succeed. Within the next eight years we aim to project the national team into the world’s top ten and into the world cup.

The majority of girls, all brilliant netballers, will not get professional contracts, but they will get a great education, excellent language skills, the confidence to believe in themselves and to become true global citizens.

The academy is attached to our Little O camp on the shores of Lake Victoria and soon to be inside the Serengeti. It is part of our SDG centre initiative where substantial projects in each of our camps & hotels bring to life the UN sustainable development goals for our guests.

The academy is a life-affirming place to visit and to spend time with the girls who want to share their journey with you, even for just a day. It inspires everyone who visits to take a positive step towards our collective  global challenges and warms everybody’s heart. It feels like the future of long haul tourism, a tourism we could all be proud of.
