We might be exactly what your nature loving clients have been searching for: a hideaway rooted in sustainability, rich in raw beauty, & layered with simple, soulful luxury.

Discover Chole Mjini in the heart of Mafia Island Marine Park in Tanzania:

A lodge like no other that welcomes guests to unwind and connect to the location, community and our projects.

With 7 unique treehouses nestled in gardens that include towering baobab trees and embrace the ruins of the old Chole Mjini trading town, guests stay immersed in nature with starry skies, a multitude of birds singing and the ocean’s soothing sound.

Activities That Amaze

  • Sleep in treehouses surrounded by ancient baobaobs & wake to birdsong

  • Dine under the stars and eat what was caught that day

  • Swim with whale sharks (Oct-Feb) - wildlife encounters that stay with you

  • Turtle‑hatching (Jun-Jul) - witness life’s beginning on pristine beaches

  • Sunset dhow sails, Snorkeling or diving on vibrant reefs with 400+ fish species

  • Private sandbank trips

It is an experience for those who long to feel the wind in their hair, sunlight on their skin, and the stillness of nature in their bones

The lodge has supported community and conservation since its inception in 1994. With Chole Mjini Trust our youth can dream of education from kindergarten to tertiary. We were the founders of whale shark tourism in Mafia and continue to provide responsible marine encounters through Kitu Kiblu. The Ropes of Hope Foundation is dedicated to coral restoration.

Every detail tells a story

We built Chole Mjini slowly, by hand, and together with the local community. We live here still and welcome guests into a deeper experience of place – and of themselves.

We work with a small circle of agents who share our values and love introducing their guests to rare, unforgettable places. If that sounds like you, we would love to explore a partnership.
