Elewana Collection is adding a luxury safari option in Tanzania with the expected opening in June 2027 of the Ngorongoro Explorer Lodge.

The lodge will be the new upmarket wildlife retreat overlooking the famous Ngorongoro Crater. The new luxury lodge will feature 84 rooms. As the second property in Elewana’s Explorer collection, it will be located in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ngorongoro Conservation Area, at the highest point of the crater’s eastern rim.

Designed to combine premium hospitality, conservation-focused tourism and immersive safari experiences, the new lodge will provide travellers with direct access to one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife destinations, including the crater floor, Olduvai Gorge and the surrounding landscapes that have shaped Tanzania’s natural and cultural heritage

The upcoming Ngorongoro Explorer Lodge will sit approximately 15 minutes from the crater gate, giving guests convenient access to the Ngorongoro Crater floor, one of the world’s most remarkable wildlife environments. The crater is home to an estimated 25,000 large mammals, including iconic species such as lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards and rhinoceroses.

The location will allow visitors to experience safari adventures while staying above the crater itself, with panoramic views stretching across the vast caldera. The property will also serve as a gateway to Olduvai Gorge, a globally significant archaeological site often referred to as the “Cradle of Mankind” because of its importance in understanding early human history.

The accommodation at Ngorongoro Explorer Lodge will include 84 rooms, all designed with uninterrupted views towards the crater. Each guestroom will feature floor-to-ceiling glass windows, bringing the surrounding landscape directly into the living spaces.

Every room will include modern facilities such as minibars, telephones, kettles, tea and coffee stations and universal charging units to meet international traveller expectations.

The interior design concept has been developed by Jallan Sahba, drawing inspiration from the colours, textures and character of the Ngorongoro landscape. The interiors will aim to reflect the surrounding wilderness while providing contemporary comfort for global travellers.

Safari Adventures, Wellness and Cultural Experiences to Expand Guest Offerings

Beyond traditional game drives, Ngorongoro Explorer Lodge will offer a wide range of activities designed to appeal to different types of travellers, including families, couples and multigenerational groups.

Guest experiences will include cultural talks, stargazing sessions, photography programmes, yoga, meditation activities and an indoor cinema. The lodge will also feature a photographic studio for visitors looking to capture and enhance their wildlife photography experiences.

Family-focused programmes will include wildlife education, cultural activities and specially designed safari experiences for younger guests. These activities are expected to support a growing demand for experiential travel, where visitors seek deeper connections with destinations and local communities.

Wellness will form an important part of the guest experience at Ngorongoro Explorer Lodge. The property will include a dedicated spa featuring four treatment rooms, including one double treatment room for couples.

Ngorongoro Explorer Lodge is being developed on the site of an existing property, meaning the new project will not increase the overall bed capacity within the local area, according to Elewana Collection.

The development process will include the repurposing of materials from the previous lodge site, alongside the use of sustainable building technologies and environmentally responsible construction principles.

The property is also pursuing EDGE certification, with Elewana Collection targeting certification before the lodge officially opens in June 2027. EDGE certification recognises buildings that achieve measurable improvements in energy efficiency, water savings and sustainable resource use.

The sustainability strategy aligns with Tanzania’s broader focus on balancing tourism growth with conservation protection in environmentally sensitive areas.

Revenue generated from guest stays at Ngorongoro Explorer Lodge will contribute towards the Land & Life Foundation, Elewana Collection’s charitable non-profit organisation.
