Choosing Summits Africa means ensuring fair treatment and proper compensation for the people who make clients' climbs possible.

But why are they a bit more expensive? It's about their commitment to responsible tourism and making a difference on Kilimanjaro!

Summits Africa are committed to paying porters $15 a day (before taxes) –  and year to date, including tips, that means around $21 per porter per day take home.

How does that compare with "budget" companies? According to data released by KPAP, some companies are still pay as little as 8,000 tsh ($3.15) per day and with no way to monitor tips, it's literally anyone's guess how much they take home.

Director, Ake Lindstrom explained "Not only do we always aim to be a top payer, but we also audit total take home, food, sleeping arrangements, guide leadership and the list goes on. Fair wages are just the beginning of Summit's commitment to responsible tourism".

Their bi-annual training programmes in Money Management; HIV/AIDS Awareness; English; Community based first aid in Swahili; and Human Rights are all provided free to their porters as part of a "Step Up" programme that lead to porters being trained to become future guides.

Tim henshall, Head of Tourism Marketing commented, "Its not often that a company shouts from the mountain tops that they might be more expensive. But that's Summits for you - they take a different approach to most things and that results in a real commitment to community-led responsible tourism"
