Takims highlight Ngorongoro’s overlooked hiking experience

Frequently overlooked in favour of Ngorongoro Crater, Empakaai offers one of the most rewarding hiking experiences in the Ngorongoro Highlands, says Tanzanian DMC specialist, Takims Holidays

The journey begins with a scenic drive through volcanic landscapes, open grasslands and Maasai villages. From the crater rim, guests descend through forest towards the alkaline lake covering much of the crater floor, where flamingos can often be seen. Buffalo, bushbuck, blue monkeys and abundant birdlife may also be encountered.

Accompanied by an expert local Maasai guide and an armed ranger, travellers experience a remarkable landscape accessible only on foot and far removed from the busier routes around Ngorongoro Crater.

The hike includes a steep descent and return climb, so a reasonable level of fitness is required.

Takims can incorporate Empakaai into a wider Northern Circuit safari, either as a day hike or as part of a longer exploration of the highlands, together with Olmoti Crater and a visit to a local Maasai community.

About Takims

Imagine witnessing the Great Migration, sleeping under canvas in the Serengeti, walking among the baobabs of Ruaha with an expert guide, before finishing on the white sands of Zanzibar.

These are exactly the kinds of journeys Takims Holidays creates every day.

Operating across Tanzania’s Northern and Southern Circuits with its own fleet of safari vehicles and experienced guides, Takims has the flexibility to design itineraries around the traveller rather than fixed programmes.

From arranging private air charters between safari regions to combining both circuits within a single itinerary, the team makes the very best use of each client’s time without compromising the experience.

Every itinerary is shaped by people who know Tanzania intimately. Beyond pricing and logistics comes thoughtful advice, creative routing and the confidence that every recommendation is based on direct knowledge of the destination.

Founded in 1950 and now led by its third generation, Takims combines more than 75 years of experience with the standards expected of a Serandipians partner. The result is journeys tailored to each client that are as seamless as they are memorable.
