Nomad Tanzania opens Kusini — a return to the quiet edges of the Serengeti

Nomad Tanzania is delighted to announce the opening of Kusini, a new tented
camp set among the granite kopjes of the remote southern Serengeti.
Kusini is not about being in the middle of everything — it’s about being exactly where we
want to be: on the edges of the national park, away from the busier circuits,
where wilderness still feels wide, unhurried and deeply alive.
For years, Nomad has favoured the quieter roads and back ways — skirting the
peripheries where wildlife moves more freely. Kusini sits firmly in this tradition.
Positioned west of the Ndutu plains, the camp is surrounded by towering granite
kopjes that rise from woodland like ancient sentinels, holding life in their hollows
and shaded ledges. Spend time among them and they reveal why they are often
called the ‘cities of the Serengeti’, a hidden world of nature: insects, flowers, birds,
mammals.
Kusini is a small, permanent tented camp, with just six spacious canvas tents,
each set beneath shady trees with open verandas that look out onto the
surrounding woodland. At its heart sits a relaxed, characterful mess area built
directly onto the rocks — a place for long views, sundowners, stories and
stargazing, shaped by Nomad’s signature blend of simplicity and thoughtful
design.

This part of the Serengeti is wonderful year round. During the green months, the
southern plains come alive with movement and energy, while in the drier periods
the area reveals superb resident wildlife and a sense of space that is increasingly
rare. Whether exploring by vehicle, on foot, or climbing the kopjes for sweeping
views, Kusini offers a Serengeti experience that feels both expansive and deeply
personal.
Kusini fits naturally into Nomad’s northern journeys, pairing beautifully with
camps such as Entamanu and Lamai to create itineraries that dance around the
Serengeti’s edges. It is part of a longterm commitment to this landscape, with
plans already in motion to explore the wider kopje network through walks,
sundowners and other lowimpact wilderness experiences.
New imagery of Kusini is now available on Hornbill, offering a first look at this
remarkable corner of the Serengeti and the camp that calls it home.
